Privacy Policy

Effective date: April 2, 2026

Spotlight ("the Extension") is a browser extension that lets you visually highlight elements on any web page for clean screenshots. Your privacy matters to us, so we designed Spotlight to work entirely on your device.

Data we collect

None.

Spotlight does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data, browsing history, page content, or analytics. We have no servers that receive data from the Extension.

Permissions explained

Permission Why it's needed
activeTab Allows the Extension to inject the highlight overlay onto the page you are currently viewing when you activate Spotlight. It only runs on the tab you explicitly trigger it on — no background access to other tabs or browsing activity.
storage Saves your preferences (accent color, dim intensity, label visibility) locally in your browser using the browser.storage.local API. This data never leaves your device.
downloads Required to save captured screenshots (PNG / WebP / JPEG) to your downloads folder when you press Capture.

License validation

If you enter a Spotlight Pro license key, the Extension makes a single HTTPS request to our payment provider's license API (api.lemonsqueezy.com) to validate the key. This request happens at activation and once per week thereafter, only while a key is present. Free users never trigger any network call.

Local storage

The Extension stores a small amount of settings data in your browser's local extension storage. This includes:

  • Accent color preference
  • Dim opacity level
  • Whether element labels are shown
  • Border width and padding values
  • Pro license key and instance ID (only if you've activated Pro)

This data is stored locally on your device via the browser's built-in extension storage API. You can clear it at any time by removing the Extension.

Third-party services

Spotlight does not use any third-party analytics, tracking, advertising, or data-processing services. The only third-party request the Extension makes is the license validation described above, and only if you've entered a Pro key.

Content access

When activated, Spotlight reads the visual layout of elements on the current page (bounding rectangles and tag names) to render the highlight overlay. This information is processed entirely in memory within your browser tab and is never stored or transmitted.

Children's privacy

Spotlight does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under the age of 13.
